Overview

The Community Foundation offers SUN grants of up to $10,000 to assist human service nonprofit organizations experiencing unforeseen crises that impact their ability to provide critical services. Grants are available on a rolling basis until allocated funds are exhausted.

Focus Areas

• Emergency Situations: Funding is intended to help organizations through crises that affect their capacity to provide essential services.

• Human Services: Grants support organizations that primarily serve economically disadvantaged populations.

Eligibility

• Organization Type: Must be a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.

• Service Area: Must be located in one of these WNC counties: Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, and Yancey.

• Financial Status: Must be financially sustainable and primarily serve economically disadvantaged people.

• Grant Limit: Organizations generally are not eligible to receive more than one SUN grant per fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

Ineligibility

• Unsupported Expenses: Budget deficits, debt retirement, losses of or delays in government funding, fundraising activities, sectarian religious purposes, partisan political purposes, public agencies, individuals, or expenses incurred before grant decisions.

Application and Approval Process

1. Pre-Application

o Letter of Intent: Begin by submitting a Letter of Intent through the online application system. For technical assistance, contact Diane Crisp, Grants Manager at crisp@cfwnc.org or 828-367-9904.

2. Application Review

o Invitation: Organizations will be contacted within 3 business days if invited to submit a full application.

o Decision: A funding decision will be made within 2 weeks.

3. Grant Distribution

Grants are distributed via electronic funds transfer (EFT). Ensure current banking information is on file with CFWNC.

4. Reporting Requirements

Submit an online end-of-grant report verifying the use of funds and results. Instructions will be provided in the grant award letter.
