Overview

The Williamsburg Economic Development Authority (EDA) offers Small Business Investment Grants to encourage existing businesses and commercial property owners to invest in their properties through exterior façade improvements, landscape enhancements, and other capital improvements. The grants aim to enhance the vibrancy and character of the area, increasing customer traffic and business revenue. The maximum grant award is the lesser of $7,500 or 50% of the costs of the qualified improvements.

o Canopy or awning installation and/or repair

o Decorative fencing (excluding chain-link fencing)

o Design and construction costs associated with qualified improvements

Eligibility

• All fee simple owners of the property must sign the application.

• Application must include at least two cost estimates for the proposed improvements.

• Qualified improvements must be completed within six months of EDA approval, unless an extension is granted.

• Previous grant recipients may reapply for funding for a different project five years after receiving funding for their first project.

• Awards are not retroactive; approval must be obtained before any improvement activity begins.

• All applicable City regulations, including Architectural Review Board (ARB) approvals, must be followed.

Ineligibility

• Routine maintenance or mechanical equipment purchases or replacements

• Applicants with outstanding BPOL, real property taxes, fines, license fees, meals taxes, personal property, sales, transient occupancy, utility charges, or any other amounts owed to the City of Williamsburg

• Projects already started or completed before grant approval

• Grants do not cover any taxes for eligible projects

Preferences

• Grants are made on a first-come, first-served basis, based on the availability of program funds.

• Projects that enhance the visibility and aesthetic appeal from City streets and sidewalks.
